Victory Gardens

January 18, 2009 Leave a comment

With the upswing of “green” as fashion statement, trend and business marketing tool, another environmental idea is making a comeback, and a significant emphasis: the “Victory Garden.”

Not just a garden in which to grow your own veggies, a victory garden is a political idea of yore (that’s right; yore) to promote civic pride in communities; helping decrease the pressures put on farmers during World War II to supply both the troops and regular families. Made to show your active part in the neighborhood and America, a morale booster and being conscientious, victory gardens became a big staple in everyday lives. People so enthused by helping often turned empty, vacant lots into huge communal victory gardens (“commandeered for the war effort!”)

Nowadays the reasoning for making a victory garden is less because the government wants it and more about being aware of the problems with the environment and how we personally can decrease our own footprint. Not only does tending a garden give you a great hobby, of course it adds so much pleasure to life in general. The pride of being able to pick things you have grown yourself and cook them for your family and friends, the learning experiences of nurturing something, the frustrations. :) But also the magical process of photosynthesis too, makes it much better to breathe.

Some easy tips to get you started can be found on my favorite channel PBS’ website here. Some basic things to consider and try:

  • Star small. Maybe start with a small patch of the yard, or even better, a window box of herbs! starting small ensures you don’t get in over your head, and decide if you really like cultivating, or if you would rather trek down to the farmer’s market to pick up your broccoli.
  • Study your backyard at different times of day. there’s no way you will be growing blue-ribbon sunflowers if you plant them in a corner that never sees the light of day. Contrary, if you don’t take into consideration the midday sun, your beautiful shade rock garden could turn to just rock before you can say “moss dust.” Here’s where sketches become great help.
  • Draw a sketch of your backyard. It doesn’t have to be to scale (not yet at least) and make approximate sun positions – make smiling suns, a yellow dot, whatever – at the key times: 10 am, 2 and 5 pm. Also take notice if the walls make any spot a complete black hole where no light can be found. That might have to be used for soemthing other -storage shed area perhaps- than a garden.

With some of these tips and PBS as a guide (really, when is it not?), you will be able to have beautiful pumpkins and kickass strawberries before ’09 is out!

What is your favorite thing to eat fresh out of a garden?

Write a Letter to Someone You Admire: Helen Keller

Dear Helen Keller,

What can I say that hasn’t already been said about you? You are a true icon to look up to, and I hope for generations to come children look at you with a twinkle in their eye and the strength and courage to live like you.

(the actual letter is short this time I know, but I decided to write a different sort of bio, about the older Helen in hopes she will open some more eyes. )

Five U.S. Cities I Want To Live In:

1. Austin. Of course their music scene is out of this world (hello SXSW) and is the darling of certain “indie” directors, Austin seems to have a vibe of being a big city, but extremely down home and laid back, two things I like in contrast.

Secrets of the “Cool” Girls: An Investigative Report

January 7, 2009 1 comment

Sorry, I’m not going to be talking about Cory Kennedy (who is sooo ’06), Agness Deyn (although she does get it almost right) or *shudder* Peaches Geldorf (is she divorced yet?). Nononono, they’re sooo last season. I don’t even want to bring myself to type their names again. Their fampiric ( feminine vampires) reign of droopy, sloopy sloppy fashion is done. ’08 was about the hobo-chicness of people who can afford far more than Derelicte. Oh!-Nine will be all about the off-kilter world of staying completely technologically, politically, and physically updated and yet sitting back and enjoying just plain living life. Can you handle it? I knew that cha could. Anywho, onto the topic at hand. “Cool” girls. We all have dealt with them sometime in our lives and love ‘em or hate ‘em they do have a knack for being noticed. I mean, that is why they’re labeled “cool.” Well, thanks to being able to rub elbows with some of these awesome chicks I have been able to glean a lot of info on what it takes to be…”cool.”

They don’t smoke.Yes, smoking will always be the “dangerously cool” thing to do, no matter what ex-smokers, doctors, athletes and your parents say. We cannot flip through a magazine with pictures of runway models without seeing them puffing away. But, the fact is, their flash-in-the-pan coolness will melt away with their looks, while true coolness, from treating your body and friends around you with respect, will never die. (Little secret: Whenever I see my friends smoke, I think they look very unattractive. It totally changes your outlook on a person.) And cigarettes, despite what people think, do not make you thin. In reality, you are just trading one obsessive behavior (overeating) for another (smoking). So, Coolness Rule # 1: Physical obsessive behavior is not kosher. (obessing over Journey or paint swatches? completely ok.)

Little-ness

Petite. Tiny. Miniscule. I do love me some small stuff. I was obsessed with making things smaller and smaller when I was little, I wanted to live in a dollhouse like you wouldn’t believe! Unfortunately for my parents, it was never a “normal” dollhouse I would envision: it was a crazy version of a dollhouse, with handmade wallpaper (resembling an acid flashback tie-dye shirt), furniture made from thread spools and salvaged workshop wood. From the outside it looked like a regular ol’ tin house, but inside…Salvador Dali could have lived there! Wow. That was a tiny sidetrack…anywho… without further ado! An ode (in my favorite form: List!) to the little things that make life that. much. better.

  • Little kids’ trinket boxes (Amélie) – could you imagine fitting your most treasured possesions in a tiny little tin? Note to Self: I should make another article about what I would put in my own little trinket box…
