Take Five Friday: Favorite Words

Some of my favorite words.

“Force Majeure”- in French “superior force,” used in mostly in contracts to free both parties of liabilities because of an extraordinary event or circumstance beyond control of the parties, an “act of God.” What a magical phrase, huh? I love hearing about what crazy circumstances are the rationalization behind this phrase. Best example ever? Wizard of Oz. When everything is settled, Auntie Em is going to flip her lid when the insurance won’t cover the house being picked up in a tornado!

Quixotic -foolishly impractical especially in the pursuit of ideals ; especially : marked by rash lofty romantic ideas or extravagantly chivalrous action. This is the most romantic word ever. Someone who runs after something, no matter how useless, insane or utterly hopeless it seems, still they run. That is a perfect example of life sometimes: grasping at the ungraspable. But working for it, nonetheless.

Palimpsest – A manuscript, typically of papyrus or parchment, that has been written on more than once, with the earlier writing incompletely erased and often legible. This is something totally secretive, which is why I love it! I love old secrets like this. The example picture I found was of an old prayer book that actually underneath was an excerpt of writings from ARISTOTLE! It blows my mind they would deem his work not fit, and just write over it like it was nothing. Better than burning it though, right? we still have it. aristotle-palimpsestphoto credit

Fastidious – showing or demanding excessive delicacy or care 2: reflecting a meticulous, sensitive, or demanding attitude. This word always reminds me of the song “Killer Queen.” And how incredibly wonderful Freddie Mercury says “fastidious.” That is the plain and simple reason I love this word so much.

Diaphanous - characterized by such fineness of texture as to permit seeing through. ex. fabrics or 2 : characterized by extreme delicacy of form : ethereal.  Such a magical word; conjures up dreams of flowy, filmy curtains, blowing into a garden covered with early morning mist. A woman in a gauzy, billowing gown, almost transparent -both the woman and the dress- pads through the garden and looks back at you and cries out, ” I’m in the garden.” You know, something as equally ethereal as that.

Fantastic Short Read: An Old Fiend (not the real title)

Joyce Carol Oates’Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” makes for some pretty amazing 20-30 minutes of reading.

Definitely makes you stumble around in a bit of a thoughtful daze after, too. Was he The Devil? Was he a projection of her growing into womanhood? Was this story Lynch’s muse of sorts for Twin Peaks’ Laura Palmer?

Read it and le tme know what you think it means…

New Baby

I went with my boyfriend to visit his 3.5 day old niece yesterday, and I got so overwhelmed.

I had to cry a little; she was so incredibly tiny. She also had more hair than I did until I was about 5!

It’s an amazing feeling, being so close to a new life, a clean slate full of possibilities and guided by nothing but love.

Books I Cherish: Part One

In this series of posts, called “Books I Cherish,” I will focus on a certain story, book, or even author who has touched my life in a profound way. As everyone’s experience is different, my views will differ with the “critics” and others views.

The first in this series is Tom Robbins.

I was first introduced to Tom Robbins by a very perceptive English teacher, who saw that I would understand and thoroughly appreciate his style of writing and theories about life, love, sex and magic (not to be confused with the Red Hot Chili Pepperstake on it.) There has never been another person who had given me a greater author by that prescience, ever. I wrote an essay about him and she was impressed by how quickly I “got” it. Well, my dorky mind enjoys ridiculously over the top flowery, clever language (which is why I didn’t mind the ridic-speak in Juno), and I ate up 6 of his novels with relish. Enjoyment relish, not literal condiment relish.

Take Five Friday

Hmmm…for today’s Take Five, I do believe I will blab about

The Top 5 Websites I Could Not Live Without.

Keep in mind they are not the only websites I have to visit almost everyday, just the top 5 in an extremely long list!

Film Drunk/What Would Tyler Durden Do?/ WarmingGlow

I realize I already failed at Top 5 in theory, but hear me out. These three sites are kind of in the same vein, hence they are one pick. If you enjoy snarkiness (which I think may have been the reason the Internet was invented), this trio is approaching the peak of Snarky Sh*tstorm.

MSN Health and Fitness

They are excellent at keeping it simple. Firming Up Your Danger Zone (my words, not theirs), foods you’re not eating but should be, and plain and simple exercise moves for the office. Their short but handy articles give me the boost of fitness smarts I need to be confident in my food choices.

Stickam

Weird name, but incredibly awesome. An online LIVE community, like if Myspace and YouTube had an illegitimate child. I use this at least 4-5 times a week. With starting an online shop with a great friend who happens to live 3,000 miles away, it is invaluable to still have facetime together. It kind of keeps us in check with each other. Like, if we don’t finish a photo shoot you can actually see the disappointment, instead of an ambivalent text. And, she has an awesome band that does over the internet concerts from their cellar.

Posititvity Blog

I am addicted in the best way to this blog.  The guy that runs it is amazingly positive, always has a nice thing to say, and even his Twitter makes you all tingly with, well, positivity! My favortie articles so far are the Pearls of Wisdom, Bruce Lee’ s Top 7 Life-Shapers, and Things I Wish They Taught Me In School.

Lastly,

a tie! Because these two just have to both be on the list.

Awkward Things I Say To Girls, and Nie Nie Dialogues.

I strongly suggest for both of these blogs you go back to the ABSOLUTE beginning and read that way. they are both incredibly precious, heartwarming, and really make you feel like these people are letting you into their world, baring their souls.
