Well little darlings, I am off to a mini vacation! I will be taking the train to Albuquerque to visit family, eat the hottest peppers I can stand, and take tons of pictures at the Balloons Fiesta launch at dawn.

See you next week!

Movie Review: Zombieland

Yes, Jesse Eisenberg has been in two “-land” ‘s in a row.  Yes, “Nut Up or Shut Up” has been overused in the previews. But I’ll be a monkey’s uncle if that film isn’t entertaining. It’s fantastically different (as different as a zombie movie could be), the writing and direction flows and is imagined well (see  ”The Rules”), and the actors mesh so well together it’s like they’ve been brothers and sisters for a lifetime.

Exciting and sentimental while staying aware this is a horror comedy and not sending a political message, this movie is just plain fun.

Plus, it has, hands-down THE best cameo ever. Just try and prove me wrong.

Movie Review: Whip It!

Go see this movie. Stop reading this, turn off your computer, and go see this movie. This is writing acting and -dare I say?- debut directing at its best. Everyone in this movie is a woman role model (hell, even Juliette Lewis is an amazing “villain”), and it will leave you empowered. You will feel happy to be a women, proud of the fact that men weren’t the BIG deal in this movie, and yes, you will be thinking of what your own roller derby name would be. Trust me ladies, take your daughters, sisters, friends, and potential lovers to this movie. If they don’t like it and you do, check them into the boards, figuratively speaking.

p.s. I also recommend reading the book “Derby Girl.” Written by Shauna Cross, the screenwriter for the movie, she makes you feel included in Bliss’ world.

UPDATE: I am giving a task to all my amazing readers: Go see the movie. Here is a quote from the feminist Beau about the consequences of not supporting this film:

“We say we want more movies with strong female characters, but if obvious garbage like Surrogates can outdraw Whip It, then why would the studios greenlight any new projects?

All you women, all you’re going to get is Sex and the City sequels and you know what? You’ll deserve it.

If you don’t go see Whip It, you deserve your shitty Kate Hudson/Sandra Bullock/Jen Aniston rom-coms.”

Not that there’s anything wrong with Sex and the City, but there needs to be more variety, don’t you agree, my open-minded mavens?

Take Five Friday: Ladies to Love

October 2, 2009 1 comment

In honor of their October Birthdays, here are five of my favorite ladies.

kikithe most famous Kiki photo. “Le violon d’Ingres” by Man Ray.

Alice “Kiki de Montparnasse” Prin (October 2, 1901) She was the very definition of “bohemian.” One of my favorite quotes from her was “all I need is an onion, a bit of bread, and a bottle of red; and I will always find somebody to offer me that.” She was so optimistic she gives me hope in times tough and hard that you can still be laid back and (for the most part) worry-free. If anyone feels the urge to buy me a copy of her memoirs, I do accept gifts. :P

Halloween Haunted House in Miniature

October 1, 2009 2 comments

Fall is my second favorite season (behind spring, bien sûr), because it finally starts to cool off enough to come out of the air conditioning and play outside again. It’s also a terrific season because it kicks off with my favorite holiday: Halloween!

I love the costumes, the idea of masking who you are, the parties, the food and the CANDY!

I am glad I am not the only person who gets into the spirit because the extremely creative woman behind Happy Find has made her own little Halloween homage: a haunted dollhouse! Watch as it takes shape by following the posts herehere and here

The orange glow makes it extra creepy!

My favorite things are the teeny candles!

See her inspiration from Amy at Sweet Sweet Life.

I have always been busy in the process of moving and packing things up around Halloween, so I never get to decorate how I like, but I am counting down like an excited kid nonetheless.

More Halloween crafts, party ideas and fun in the coming weeks!
