A Short Argument for Hard Work

April 20, 2010 2 comments

“I’m a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it.” Thomas Jefferson

I am trying to abstain from the computer and have a fully productive, incredibly creative day of making everyone, including myself, smile.

Your Humble Narrator will report back on the success of this day tomorrow.

StrikeForce: Nashville

April 15, 2010 1 comment

You know what is crazy about how incredibly badass these posters are? Only one of them is UFC. Strikeforce could have a leg up on UFC if they use Japanese poster designers.

This Saturday is the Strikeforce card on CBS and boy oh boy I feel lucky. Not only are some awesome fights on this card, but I will be working so I will be able to watch it since it will be on CBS. Thank you, CBS.

MAIN CARD

Dan “Hollywood” Henderson vs. Jake “to be nicknamed at a late date” Shields

(I don’t know why, but I’m kind of upset Shields doesn’t have a nickname.) Shields may be coming off a 13-win streak, but I think the MMA gods have decided that 39-year-old Hendo will continue to fight. Even if he does have lame wardrobe choices, he has a chin that could cut through car doors and gives them love taps to put them to sleep. I can’t really say Shields would get lucky on his feet, because I think that’s what Bisping was expecting to do, too. If it goes to the ground, it’s over for Shields.

Gegard Mousasi vs. Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal

15 wins in a row. Repeat 15 WINS in a row. 28 wins, 2 losses. If you have never watched this kid (and I call him “kid” because he is a year younger than me – OLD!) fight, do yourself a favor. I can’t even pick one since the highlights are good, but watching how he develops in each fight is amazing. He has the indomitable talent of Anderson Silva, without the petulant displays. More like a Fedor mindset. King Mo is undefeated in his MMA career, and I do believe this fight will break that streak.

Gilbert Melendez vs. Shinya Aoki

AOKIIIII PANTS! Unfortunately in order to compete in Strikeforce, he had to give them up, but that won’t stop me drawing hearts around this adorable pic. Or this one. I hope for the sake of Japanese MMA he wins, but Gilbert is also pretty badass…a toughie!!

The undercard fights are pretty obscure, but one I’m semi-interested in: Ovince St. Preux. For that name alone I want him to be a big star, just so everyone has to say it all the time. Oh-vahnce Sahnt Proh. Well, something like that.

I am seriously excited for this. Thanks again CBS.

(i have not been paid by CBS; I’m just really happy that despite being at work I get to see these fights.)

An Outift Made For a King

My friend Alex always comments on how cute my Album and Outfit posts are, so I thought I’d dig in my brain a little and make a set just for him. He’s a video game nerd with a penchant for Japanese food and…well, the ridiculous. So that made the ideas pretty easy.

In doing this I learned that guys are so much more limited to fancy up their outfits (“what do you mean you can’t wear a ribbon in your hair?”), so it was an even bigger challenge and so much fun!

I love that shirt but I loathe those guys eyebrows.

Galaxian outfit, perfect for a day in the park to get some Vitamin D into your system after a week of staying inside with the curtains drawn.

I cheated on this one, but that Berzerk shirt is too cool!

Berzerk, for Casual Day. Please note when it comes to t-shirts, walk the line. DO NOT wear them so baggy you could use it as a sail if it gets windy, and NOT too tight you can see the outline of your chest hair. That cannot be unseen.

I know this one has two neck accessories, and I don’t care dammit!

Asteroids, for when you need to dress it up a step, but you can still wear awesome silver shoes.

Finally, no list would be complete without a little Choose Your Own Adventure action:

Not pictured: holster belt for your ray gun.

Space Patrol, for the day when you need a bowtie to sharpen up your outfit. Red pants are always awesome, as long as you use the same styling advice as plain t-shirts: not clown pants big, not zucchini smuggling tight.

Take Five Friday: Jess is Having the Best Week Ever

April 9, 2010 1 comment

My birthday week (or month, if I can swing it) is always jam-packed with fun and adventure, and lots of sweets! These are some random excerpts from my adventures:

5. Ring Pop as a breakfast substitute while on the road. There is actually a time when it’s too early for lollies. It’s 8:30 a.m. But it has been preserved to be enjoyed at a later date.

4. Thrifting. As if going on my own isn’t fun enough, going with my family is even more! My grandma found and bought me this lamp for my birthday. She rocks.

3. Getting away for the day. Driving up to Prescott, even just for the day, is always fun. Cooler weather, tons of flowers, and beautiful, calendar-worthy snapshots.

2. My little baby spinach seeds have begun to grow. Hopefully they can survive long enough to make a home-grown salad!

1. The best thing this week was finding this giant valentines’ day card my grandpa (nickname Rocky, RIP) wrote to my grandma in 1977. The part that really got me was that he told he that not only did he love her, but he respected her. *gulp* jeez.

What has really got you jazzed/thankful/giddy this week?

Recipe for a Perfect Day

I like to think of perfect day recipes as a starting point for inexhaustible ideas for a bunch of mini-ideal days. Perfect days have no time limits, store hours, money problems and all that other real world stuff that makes a perfect day daunting if you think of it responsibly. But I have never been one to think of responsibility as a roadblock. So, here are some elements that would spice up my recipe for a perfect day.

the girls, springing into “adventure day” action

Awake with the smell of coffee brewing , opening a stack of letters and postcards, making pink-colored strawberry pancakes then enjoying them in bed while watching a guilty pleasure movie (like Dirty Love or Be Kind Rewind), picnic lunch at the LOVE statue complete with gelato, photobooth shenanigans and candy shop fun at smeeks, sunset in a bat watching area, skipping stones on the lake at night and dinner with tons of family, family and friends that lasts for hours.

While all these things might not happen in one day ( I would be too exhausted to skip stones if I drove around this much in one day!), this certainly has my brain flowing for tons of different nights of fun and fancy-free adventures!
