The Big Picture

Does anyone else get impatient for each new boston.com “The Big Picture” photo essay? I love that the pictures take up your whole screen, especially when it’s something poignant or heartwarming. So I think this evening I’m going to pour myself a pint and pretend I’m in a couple of these Oktoberfest photos. This year is the 178th Oktoberfest, and I think that is just wunderbar.

Ken Burns’ ‘Prohibition’

Last night I watched the first part of Ken Burns’ documentary about Prohibiton called, yes, “Prohibition.” For right now, all I can really say is: whoa.

It is already amazing and it has just barely got to the actual law going into effect! I want to watch all 5+ hours of it right now with a barrel of gin. But, technically it’s fall now so I’ve put the gin away. And, because I would probably get some wide-eyed looks from The Beau if I just sat in front of the TV with a barrel of booze.

But last night I did enjoy some Glenfiddich with graham crackers as I watched. It wasn’t gross, but I suppose I could have eaten something that wood have added to the flavors of the scotch. But then the skies parted and I remembered that Esquire, in their infinite wisdom, tweeted about a recipe to mix up in honor of the documentary: The Ward Eight.

The Ward Eight

Ingredients

2 ounces rye whisky
3/4 ounce lemon juice
3/4 ounce orange juice
1 teaspoon grenadine

Glass Type: cocktail glass

InstructionsShake the whiskey,* fresh-squeezed juices, and a scant teaspoon of grenadine well with cracked ice, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass. This one also makes a fine cooler: Simply strain into a Collins glass half-full of cracked ice and top to taste with club soda or seltzer.

* You can also use Canadian Club, a ryelike concoction acceptable in cocktails.

And a little backstory (from the above-linked article):

Yet one thing is certain: to make a proper Ward Eight, you need rye and orange juice. (If made with bourbon and only the lemon juice, as many suggest, it’s just a whiskey sour with grenadine: a decent drink, but no Ward Eight.) Y’see, the sharp tang of the rye blends just so with the bite of the lemon and the rounded sweetness of the orange, leaving absolutely no taste of liquor. In short, this drink lies like a politician.

Which brings us to the name: They say this old smoothie was inaugurated at the victory supper (the night before the election, naturally) for Martin “The Mahatma” Lomasney, running for something or other from Boston’s Ward Eight — now Roxbury and the South End. Where, it’s safe to say, one of these hasn’t been poured in fifty years.

Week in Review

Although this week was kind of poopy (I think i am getting exasperated with the sun/heat, a different kind of Seasonal Disorder), it’s starting to clear up and be a wonderful weekend, despite having to work on Sunday. Here’s the week in pictures:

Wished ‘Tortilla Tuesday’ a happy anniversary,

saw a cloud that looked like a sitting camel, then sang “Prince Ali” while in the car by myself,

The Beau got Limited Edition Confetti Pop tarts. Let me tell you a little something about pop tarts in our house. They are our dessert. Never a breakfast thing, so these confetti ones are right up our dessert alley. And let me tell you, THEY TASTE JUST LIKE FUNFETTI CAKE. It is uncanny!

Went with my mom, sister, and sister-in-law to see The Help. I liked it, very beautiful direction and the clothes were to die for. I’m still not sure about the story, I have heard so many conflicting views. But, I do know that watching it has made me want to read the book, and to find books about Civil Rights by black women in the South.

We watched this Spanish thriller-horror movie called ‘Eskalofrio’ (Shiver) and it was pretty good. We have watched quite a few Spanish language horror movies and they are all so much better than drivel that America seems to think is good.

Lastly, I saw this penpal gift idea on Design Sponge and am thinking that all my penpals will be getting these soon, they look like so much fun!

I also wanted to apologize for my lack of posting. With it being so hot outside, there is little I want to do except write the occasional letter and lie down on the tile next to tortilla and eat my pop tarts in frozen yogurt.

But I have a lot of things I’m working on, mainly in the vein of DIY and crafty things, so stay tuned!

End of Month Tally – June

I didn’t want to make a collage, so here’s a picture of me with hungry eyes.

Books I Read:

Ministry of Fear and Wicked Bugs. Very excited because I have already ordered my next stack of books and cannot wait to wile away these hot days cooling off with a good book.

Movies:

Nighthawks, Demolition Man, Cobra, Cliffhanger, do you see a theme here? I think when I grow up I want to be Stallone historian. Or a Stallone character translator. Or both. I guess I also saw Flakes, but I can’t really say I enjoyed it. We watched a lot of TV shows though, The Beau had never watched Arrested Development, so we blew through that super quick. We also started Samantha Who? and Louie. Sidenote, Samantha Who? is surprisingly good, despite the ABC goof troop music.

Charity:

I donated a bunch (probably hundreds) of plastic bags for dog parks. I know that’s not really a charity, but I had them, they needed them – it counts a little bit, right? And there’s nothing I hate more than people not picking up after their dogs. Especially when there’s a mastiff-sized poo on a trail that you know didn’t come from a horse.

Budget Analysis:

Poor, in every sense of the word. I have been saving for my 6-months insurance bill that’s coming up in August and it’s driving me crazy. I have a list of things to buy for craft projects, but then I think about the move in December and try to figure out if I really need to buy stuff or not. Of course the answer is not, but, come on, CRAFTINESS – it’s in my blood.

Week in Review

I didn’t write a week in review last week, because there wasn’t a whole lot to list. So maybe combining two weeks will be pure magic!

Row 1: Last week – took some photos of a tea party, ate some cake at said tea party, hung out on the steps of my grandma’s kickass house with this boot and watched the sun set.

Row 2: Tried to stay out of the heat by doing this. Yes, that is my Netflix recently watched list. That is all Futurama. To be fair, I was cleaning the house while watching them. I drank some very good beer… no really though, that beer was heavenly. Like ambrosia. I went to a baby’s first birthday. Ah, to be young and have a special cake all to yourself…

Row 3: Went disc golfing and didn’t bring my camera. The boys were starting to make fun of me for using my camera as a place marker. This was the only pic I took, and only because those roots looked like a hand! Made some mason jar 4th of July cakes with my sister (mine’s a little empty because I forgot to tell The Beau I was going to take pictures before he dug in!) and I got in the zone and wrote some letters. I love when I get into my Zone!

Day 29 – Your Favorite Film as a Kid

Wizard of Oz

Just watching that clip makes me want to get a bowlful of M&Ms, popcorn and watch the whole movie.

We didn’t watch too many movies when I was little, or at least, not one so many times that I remember it right now. The way I came to the Oz conclusion was that my family still, in this day of digital copies, Blu-rays, Netflix and used Amazon copies that start at $3, has the VHS copy (from the TV! Edited out commercials by hitting ‘pause’!) we used to watch. Yes of course, insert a joke about how the right pair of shoes taking you anywhere, but this movie appeals to the senses of a kid with songs, black – and – white to color, and Munchkinland.

I remember vividly the first time I watched The Wizard of Oz. Looking at the posters advertising the movie, I was surprised when it started it was in Black and white. I thought maybe it just didn’t show color on the station it was airing on. So I didn’t say anything. Then in the scene when she opens the door to Oz and is flooded with hypercolor, I lost myself. I don’t know if I squealed or did anything physically but stare open-mouthed, but inside I was struck with movie magic. Thinking back, that feeling is amazing. Who knew wide-eyed wonder was a feeling you could hold onto if it was special enough?
