Anthro-Inspired Giveaway!

September 15, 2011 1 comment

Haha! tricked you – it isn’t a giveaway I’m doing! I just thought I’d drum up some more entries for my BFFF who is doing a giveaway on her amazing craft blog, honeyscrap. She made that necklace.

I am constantly telling her I would pay major $$ for anything she makes on her blog, and here she’s giving something away! People, if you like it, put a ring (or comment) on it.

Nom Nom Nom: Avocado and You

September 7, 2011 3 comments

I have been staring at Google images of avocados off and on all summer. I just have to share some avocado-love or I might eat my laptop.

Raise your hand if you love avocado! (Both of my hands are raised … I love it that much.)

I only very recently found out I am a DIE-hard avocado fan. I don’t know what was wrong with me the first 24 years of my life. But the last 3, with avocados in it, have been much richer indeed.

Beautiful, healthy, creamy avocado is a fabulous food that is delicious when made into guacamole and just as tasty when served sliced on salad or chopped in a wrap. It’s also a great offset for spiciness in chili. It’s a great alternative to mayo on a sandwich. But even alone it is divine, and perfectly filling.

So many choices it seems almost overwhelming…let’s start simple.

Avocado salad. I’m not talking about avocado in a salad but rather a salad served inside an avocado … so you scoop up a bit of avocado and a bit of salad in every bite. For an easy “Stuffed” avocado salad, cut your avocado in half and remove the pit. Then, toss a simple salad of hardboiled egg, red pepper, cucumber, olives and parmesan cheese. You can add a tiny taste of Caesar dressing, but really, it’s not necessary. Then it’s all stuffed into the avocado, used as a bowl, and eaten directly out of the shell.

Pretty darn good. Really. The Caesar dressing adds just enough acid to the dish while the creamy avocado and egg complement each other nicely. The olives lend a touch of saltiness and the cucumber and red pepper bring the crunch.

You can also try this amazing recipe for avocado pops from A Cup of Jo.

But one of my favorite things I have found for avocado is even easier than that: adding it to scrambled eggs and cheese. Makes it taste creamier AND helps make you feel fuller faster!

There might be too much cheese in there. Maybe.

There are a few other uses for avocado, if you’re not as keen on eating it as me.

It makes a great hair conditioner, you can use it instead of mayo but the rich fats help smooth hair.

You can use it as an anti-wrinkle smoothing mask: Grab an avocado + 5 drops of almond oil. Mix them into a a nice paste and apply it all over face and neck. Leave it for 20 minutes, then wash it off with water.

You can find a lot more recipes and ideas on the official avocado website.

And, if people are questioning your new love, show them avocado’s wikipedia page and how super this super food really is.

Week in Review

Although this week was kind of poopy (I think i am getting exasperated with the sun/heat, a different kind of Seasonal Disorder), it’s starting to clear up and be a wonderful weekend, despite having to work on Sunday. Here’s the week in pictures:

Wished ‘Tortilla Tuesday’ a happy anniversary,

saw a cloud that looked like a sitting camel, then sang “Prince Ali” while in the car by myself,

The Beau got Limited Edition Confetti Pop tarts. Let me tell you a little something about pop tarts in our house. They are our dessert. Never a breakfast thing, so these confetti ones are right up our dessert alley. And let me tell you, THEY TASTE JUST LIKE FUNFETTI CAKE. It is uncanny!

Went with my mom, sister, and sister-in-law to see The Help. I liked it, very beautiful direction and the clothes were to die for. I’m still not sure about the story, I have heard so many conflicting views. But, I do know that watching it has made me want to read the book, and to find books about Civil Rights by black women in the South.

We watched this Spanish thriller-horror movie called ‘Eskalofrio’ (Shiver) and it was pretty good. We have watched quite a few Spanish language horror movies and they are all so much better than drivel that America seems to think is good.

Lastly, I saw this penpal gift idea on Design Sponge and am thinking that all my penpals will be getting these soon, they look like so much fun!

I also wanted to apologize for my lack of posting. With it being so hot outside, there is little I want to do except write the occasional letter and lie down on the tile next to tortilla and eat my pop tarts in frozen yogurt.

But I have a lot of things I’m working on, mainly in the vein of DIY and crafty things, so stay tuned!

National S’mores Day

Although I’m not entirely sure if it’s officially recognized (that takes an act by Congress), today is National S’mores Day.

I’m going to celebrate two ways: posting some fun ways to share s’mores with others below, and by partaking in them as much as possible this evening.

Amy Atlas, twig + thistle, Weber recipes

I am so interested in that Weber recipe for grilled banana s’mores. I know The Beau will email me as soon as he sees this and say, “I can’t believe you held this from me!” and I’ll have to make it to make up for the secret.

Just an Update

I haven’t posted in a while, so I thought I would just give a “hey, I’m here, it’s just too hot to craft/take photos/do anything.”
Here is some photo evidence about how hot it is:

He no longer pretends the cool tiles are enough, just plants himself in front of the fan.

This is one of my discs. “But PepperJess,” you may cry, “you just said it’s too hot to do anything.”

To which I reply, “Don’t get yer panties in a twist…this is in Flagstaff.” It’s so hot in the Valley that I went on a mini-vacation with The Beau and friend and it was heavenly up there.

Week in Review

A lot, and not a lot, of things happened.

Celebrated Fourth of July weekend by putting sparklers on almost all my meals,

became an auntie early Saturday morning(!!!),

went disc golfing and had a most unusual hazard (horses AND water!),

and am bracing myself to dig out my elf costume and celebrate Christmas in July at work!
