Yes, you read that right, my list of lists. If you enjoy making lists as much as I do (which is pretty odd for a right-brainer like me), then making lists of lists is the epitome of fun. All the research! When it all comes together you feel like a Knowledge Queen! Anyway, here are some of the great lists of Halloween costumes I have found.

-not martha has a superb list of lists, too. This link to different drink based costumes is a great read.

-Real Simple and Martha Stewart has some great family-oriented costumes.

-Most of these costume ideas from babble could be used for kids or adults. Those Fantastic Mr. Fox costumes, oh my goodness!

-SplitSider has a list of comedy-related halloween ideas that are pretty great. If I had short hair I would be Stefon for sure.

-I adore this website, take back halloween. Despite what society says, you don’t have to dress as a slutty ladybug, cop or whatever. You can dress clever and cool without a short skirt.

All you need is a sheet of printer-ready labels, some postcard templates, beer coasters and stamps, of course.

I found several different vintage postcards designs just by searching Google and looking through a few of my favorite DIY sites, How About Orange and Just Something I Made.

Step 1: Turn the clean jar upside-down on the dropcloth in a well-ventilated area. I chose outside.

Step 2: In short bursts, spray primer onto glass. I stress the short bursts because as you can see in my 2nd photo, I sprayed it like I would with spray paint in long strokes, and it came out all pebbly and crumbled off when you touched it. So, once again, let me emphasize the shortness of the bursts!

Step 3: Once dry, feel free to use the jar as pen holder, flower/tree branch vase, craft tool wrangler, or anything of the sort!

In honor of the Badwater Marathon beginning, I thought I’d do a little repost of something I wrote last year after I had finished The Chris McDougall book Born to Run, about (you guessed it) running and the Tarahumara tribe:

I had never heard about “ultramarathons” before picking up the book Born to Run, by Christopher McDougall. Now I am intrigued to no end about this sort of running.

The book started with the author wondering why, if he bought the most expensive shoes and went to the best running doctors, did it still hurt to run? His quest brought him from professors and doctors all the way to the wilds of Mexico and into a tribe who barely wear shoes (much less than the $350 Nike’s) and floated upon the canyon floor. From waaay back in time (talking about Apache “vacations” when they would run from Arizona to the California Coast. Yes, you read that right.) to right this minute marathons (Western States, Death Valley’s Badwater, and the Copper Canyon Run). Every time I finished a chapter, I wanted to see how far I could run, just for the fun of it. That is why these people run. Not to win cash or be on the cover of magazines, but because running 100 miles in one day gives them a sense that life is theirs, always fresh and open to anything.

Since the 2010 Copper Canyon ultramarathon, which began with that book, is slated to be this coming Sunday (March 7th), I thought I would write about the 5 Things I have Learned about Running through this book.

1. Easy, Light, Smoooooth. This is the mantra of Caballo Blanco, an American that has decided to call the Copper Canyon area his home. He taught the author (and the reader) that if you are checking yourself while running, and have at least two of these in use, the third will come naturally. Running is a forward motion, not a bobbing, up and down one. It is not about lengthening your stride, but being light and grazing in your footwork.

2. Competition is not the name of the game. Here is a video of snapshots from the second year’s run in Copper Canyon. It seems like you form a definite bond, enduring that kind of grueling and exhilarating thing with people over and over. Sure, there is always a definite winner, but I think the point is that if you can survive the whole race, you are as good as 1st place.

3. Live to be 100 and able to run 100 miles. Eating a salad for breakfast, dehydrated corn is an amazingly revitalizing snack, and run run running for fun, not to lose weight are just some of the amazing things I learned about nutrition from this book. The Tarahumara people have been subsisting off what they could catch by running, or what the ground and limited water could give them, for thousands of years. Their life expectancy averages much higher than the U.S., all the while the elders still running well into their 80s. p.s. when looking up ‘pinole’ on Amazon, I was tickled by the fact you can buy pinole, chia seeds and the Born to Run book as a package deal!

4. Running injuries should not be a part of running. I also learned some fascinating things about the evolution of the running shoe and the subsequent skyrocketing of running injuries. The more padding and ankle protection, the more shock absorption and spring technology your shoe contains, the higher your risk for severe running injuries. There are even groups of people committed to running barefoot. Or almost barefoot. Crazy as it seems, they are on the right track. Shoes should be protecting you from nails, burrs and that’s about it. Your toes need room to splay to distribute your weight correctly, and your ankles needs to be free to toughen up.

5. I can’t stress the “fun run” aspect enough. Spurred by the book, I looked up as many pictures as I could of ultramarathon runners. In 80% of the pictures I have found, everyone is either smiling and cheering, or they look like they are inwardly reflecting. There are no intense grimaces of pain or competition, no mean-spirited psych-outs. Only ultra-love and ultra-fun. Not that it isn’t a hard thing to do, but people don’t do it for million dollar prizes. Hell, some of the prizes are even bags of corn or a belt buckle. Running because it is what you love to do. I think that is the best promotion you could give a sport.

I started to pull out my pens and realized that with just a tad bit more effort, I could really make some ridiculous mail art. So I pulled out a few more things:

washi tape, aluminum foil, paper punches, rubber stamps

Also, bottle caps and bread bag fasteners.

Entre Nous: A Woman’s Guide to Finding Her Inner French Girl by Debra Ollivier

Today I learned that 42% of people who graduate from college never read another book. That is pretty mind-blowing to me.

Rereading this once or twice a year is always enlightening. I love reading it and renewing a sense of being a lady and being a badass.

What I have learned through this book:

+Only keep things that you adore and bring you joy. If someone gives you something you aren’t in love with, set it free. Give it to someone you know will enjoy it, or donate it to the salvation army or like place. Don’t sell it. But the fact is, things you don’t like are taking up valuable place for something you could enjoy.

+Also, holding back…in general. The author notes that it took her two years of being friends with a Frenchwoman for her to open up to her. I like the idea of not spilling over-information to everyone you meet. Not everyone is special enough to enjoy your company and life stories. Curate what you want to share.

+Lastly, all the notes on food in here are fantastic. Enjoying a meal with friends is a whole experience beyond just food or just friends. Choosing your food, not constantly thinking about calories but being mindful of your food, oh, it’s all good!

What is a non-fiction book you can reread every year?

So, I made some terrific cookies a couple weeks ago. Seems like uneventful news. But these cookies, man – they were the best cookies I have ever produced. I could not believe it. Even The Beau commented about their superior cookie-deliciousness.

So, enough about things you can’t tell for yourself and onto the recipe!

I used David Leibovitz’s recipe on Serious Eats. When I started getting all my dry ingredients together, I did a double take with the amount of salt required. It was less than half of my usual amount. But, I wanted it to be true to the recipe, so I kept the faith and followed it. I am so glad I did.

One thing he did that I did not was freeze his dough. I am impatient in that when I go to make cookies, I am expecting to eat them in 30 minutes. I don’t have the forethought to do this the day before, but I recommend it. I know it helps keep them all uniform and in turn makes them cook evenly, so if you can wait for gooey cookies, follow the freezing directions.

Chunks, not chips. Better yet, chop your own! It doesn’t take much longer to accomplish, and the taste makes up for the labor. Chunks allow the flavor to spread out, and also chip chocolate is not the best quality. So try some chunks, baby.
