Etymology Day, Part Four

Phew! It took me a while to find another mystery word.

Rumpus Roomrecroom-bRec room re-creation

Most everyone knows a rumpus (or rec) room is a place where usually kids (sometimes can also be used as a man cave) congregate to hang out in the comfort of their own home, but enough privacy that your mom isn’t always running in, parading around cookies and Tang.

Although it is of unknown origin, the word rumpus is thought to be an alteration of the word “robustious, boisterous” meaning full of life and noisy. Quite fitting for a room usually filled with kids, non? The first use of it as a rumpus room was in 1940.
