Books I Read:
Flight to the Mushroom Planet, French Ways and Their Meaning, Mistresses of the Dark, re-reading one of my faves. Ugh, just look at that sad little list. I need to get back on the reading train. The Beau and I are really overzealous about our library lists and get a whole bunch of books at once. Not just cookbooks, but several novels all at once. What book fiends! Also, on another book note, my friend Jess has begun an epic journey of reading a book a week. Cheer her on and peek what she’s reading here.
I am still trying to get The Beau to watch Zodiac with me. I should have asked for my birthday! But really, haven’t watched a lot of movies: Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy, Beast with a Billion Backs. The Beau and I had a system a couple years ago that I really enjoyed and think we should get back into: We each make a list of five movies, then the other picks one from the list and those are the two flicks we watch that week.
I was really stumped about where I should send my charity donation this month. I get overwhelmed trying to think about all the things I really love (like bats and space), there are just so many things that need so much help. But then I read the diary Dan Herbertson wrote and photographed on his trip through the desecrated cities in Japan.
Blerg. I am trying to be good and only spend my birthday money on frivolous things. I have learned it is SO MUCH HARDER to spend actual cash. I need to stop bringing my debit card out when I shop and only have cash so I have to make do with whatever cash I have on hand. My friend Melissa has decided to start a little section of her blog showcasing her thrift store finds, and I LOVE this idea. Not only would it give me a fantastic excuse to go thrifting, but it would also give me a reason to get rid of/sell a lot of stuff and only keep what I love.
Also, when we went on our two-day vacation to L.A. for grilled cheese, I used paper money only (from my vacation fund) and still had tons leftover! So, all in all, a budget balance, riiiight?!
The weekend trip to the City of Angels (photo heavy)
Beginning the trip at sunrise. The clouds were unreal.
Ahh, finally made it to the Grilled Cheese Invitational. First sandwich of the day: Breakfast grilled cheese, complete with fried egg and tater tots.
Went straight from breakfast to dessert: grilled s’more, with Nutella instead of chocolate. Top of the pops tasty.
Tillamook’s Baby Loaf! They were also giving out samples of cheese and the “Love, American Style” sandwiches: just bread, butter and cheese. So sharp, so awesome.
Crazy weird Gogol-Bordello Cirque band called March Fourth.
Not pictured: 4 other sandwiches I ate so fast I didn’t get to photograph them. The Elvis: peanut butter and honey-braised bananas on uber fluffy crunchy bread.
Bacon Me Crazy: Brown sugar bacon, mozzarella, sliced strawberries, cayenne and a chocolate balsamic reduction sauce. I went back to buy another it was sooooo good. Also had muletas, cereal bars and MORE CHEESE.
Made it back to motel, checked in and ran to the New Beverly Cinema for a double-feature of “Ministry of Fear” and “The Big Clock.” So incredibly good, I seriously recommend them.
Went to the Farmer’s Market for dinner and breakfast and what a difference! Packed like sardines at night, ghost town at 8am! Had gigantic pizza slices and nutella crepes for dinner, watching people walk around a farmer’s market with actual (not paper) plates and wine glasses. Best people-watching ever. These doughnuts were amazing. Melt in your mouth delicious.
Back on the road. It blows my mind how different LA is to PHX. So green!
It rained as we were leaving.
Hey look! more windmills. Extreme wind advisory as we were driving through.
Of course as soon as we hit AZ, it’s just hot as all get out.
Haha dust sign and a dust devil.
Out of 18 photos, I put only 4 up from the actual event. What a nerd.
Now that it has started to warm up, Tortilla loves to sun himself outside. Since he doesn’t wear sunscreen, we don’t want him to get burned so we limit his sunbathing. So when he has to come inside, he satisfies himself by warming by the back door.
This week has been crazy, even without mentioning the fact that I have been having dreams so vivid I am not sleeping correctly. Well, I guess I did just mention it, here are the other things that have been goin’ ’round this week:
I am still recovering from my sister’s baby shower,
Had another birthday party (number 4, for people who are counting) where I got another awesome camera that I cannot wait to use!
I made my very first video with my camera!

Sneak peek for next week – figuring out how I can get this, or make one of my own. Such a great idea.
Last this week, but in the future (tomorrow), I am off to my very last birthday present of the month: The Beau bought us tickets to the Grilled Cheese Invitational in L.A.! Check out the site and if you love cheese like I do, you will know how excited I am. We have had so many ideas of other stuff to do (Griffith Observatory, Tar Pits, etc), but we think we are going to try to make a pilgrimage to the New Beverly Cinema to see a midnight movie showing of The Running Man! Send good luck vibes so we can get tickets!
Happy Early Easter From Tortilla, the rascaliest non-bunny carrot eater!
