30 Day Film Challenge – Day 30

30 Day Film Challenge is a challenge that lasts thirty days. It gives me a chance to wax poetic about my favorite medium, and put up silly pictures/videos.

SWEET JESUS IT IS OVER!! I can’t believe I made it through 30 days (with a couple missed days that I made up for the next day!) consistently. So proud! 🙂

Anyway, on to the final day!

Day 30 – Your Favorite Film This Time Last Year

It’s kind of crazy that I really can’t remember exactly. So thank goodness for looking through my Netflix recently viewed, I can say it was Pandora’s Box.

A femme fatale for all time, I adore Louise Brooks.

Day 29 – Your Favorite Film as a Kid

Wizard of Oz

Just watching that clip makes me want to get a bowlful of M&Ms, popcorn and watch the whole movie.

We didn’t watch too many movies when I was little, or at least, not one so many times that I remember it right now. The way I came to the Oz conclusion was that my family still, in this day of digital copies, Blu-rays, Netflix and used Amazon copies that start at $3, has the VHS copy (from the TV! Edited out commercials by hitting ‘pause’!) we used to watch. Yes of course, insert a joke about how the right pair of shoes taking you anywhere, but this movie appeals to the senses of a kid with songs, black – and – white to color, and Munchkinland.

I remember vividly the first time I watched The Wizard of Oz. Looking at the posters advertising the movie, I was surprised when it started it was in Black and white. I thought maybe it just didn’t show color on the station it was airing on. So I didn’t say anything. Then in the scene when she opens the door to Oz and is flooded with hypercolor, I lost myself. I don’t know if I squealed or did anything physically but stare open-mouthed, but inside I was struck with movie magic. Thinking back, that feeling is amazing. Who knew wide-eyed wonder was a feeling you could hold onto if it was special enough?

Day 28 – The Most Obscure Film You’ve Ever Seen

Ministry of Fear

The only movie I can think of that fits this category would be Ministry of Fear, because it is old, doesn’t play on AMC and isn’t available on DVD. The only way I would ever see it is to buy it on VHS (and also buy a VHS player), or stumble upon a movie screening. Which I did, with The Beau while on our Grilled Cheese Adventure in April. There was a noir double-screening at the New Beverly Cinema and you had us at noir. We saw The Ministry of Fear and The Big Clock. I enjoyed the former more, while he enjoyed the latter. They were both most excellent, and I am so sad I can’t watch MoF in the comfort of my own home over and over and over again.

Day 27- Your Favorite Independent Film

Swingers

Everything about this movie makes me so happy. The relationship stuff is good, but only minor in comparison to how awesome the interactions between friends are portrayed. It’s the Diner of the 90s. p.s. How did Vince Vaughn go from being amazingly hot and awesome in this to being mediocre and careless?

Also in the mix that I seriously considered: Raising Arizona, Buffalo ’66 and every John Waters and David Lynch movie.

Day 26 – Your Favorite Foreign Language Film

Amelie

Like thousands upon thousands of girls my age, I am a Francophile. I may have mentioned it before, but I took 4 years of French in high school, when only 2 were required. I was president of the French Club and the French Honor Society. Oh yeah, I was the Rushmore of all the French Clubs! I brought Le Petit Ecolier cookies to meetings and even used to practice my French vocabulary in order to ease my panic attacks. All that was before Amelie even came out

I have been told that I remind people of Amelie and every single time it has happened it pleased me to no end.

Her style, her cleverness, her shyness, I adore every little thing about her.

Come to think of it, I need those little Amelie bangs back…
